Article Writing The Power of Three

Three Is The Magic Number

Have you ever noticed that the magic number is usually three. There were three little pigs that built houses in the fairy tale, there were three bears that bothered goldilocks, three outs in baseball, three pointers are the maximum in basketball, the list goes on and on. Three is the best minimum base for stability, three seems to be the tipping point for credibility, and three just seems natural. With the power of three you can make persuasive arguments and write good articles, because people expect three points, three paragraphs, and three reasons for everything. Use the power of three in your writing and see how it improves and defines your articles , pages, and products.

Three Is The Minimum for Stability

Three is the best minimum base for stability. Let’s pretend we are going to make a stool. We could make that stool with only one leg. It would have a hard time standing up on the one leg—but we could still have a stool with just one leg. If we add a second leg to the stool, it gives the stool stability in one direction, but allows the stool to fall over on either side of the two legs. When the third leg is added, the stool can stand on its own without any external support. Three is the absolute minimum base. The stool could be made with four, five, or six legs, and will still stand up, but not with less than three. Three is that minimum base for stability.

Three is the Minimum for Credibility

Three makes a pretty good base for credibility as well. If there is just one person making a claim, then it always seems that the claim could be the one person’s opinion. If there are two people making the same claim, then it is more believable than one, but it is still easy to believe the two are working together and that the claim may not be what it appears. Somehow, though, when you get a third person with the same claim, it is much harder to refute. Three witnesses make for a stable base of credibility.

Three is Just Magic

Three really is the magic number. The three strike systems use the idea that anyone can make a mistake once. They might still stumble and make the mistake a second time, but by the third time, it appears to be a pattern that has to be dealt with.

In your writing find three main points to talk about. Use a paragraph to introduce the points, create a paragraph for each point. Use three sub-points per paragraph if possible (this is optional, but works well). Finally summarize the article with a paragraph, and you will have an article that appears well crafted, that flows perfectly, and appears completely natural. You will have unleashed the power of three.
